Building from The Bottom

Building a bankroll from the ground up takes quite a few things things to be successful.  This is something that I have had great success with and would like to share some strategies and advice for those players that are looking to build either from zero or from a very small starting bankroll ($50 or less).

Tips for Success:

  1. Play as many freerolls as you can get registered into - small ones, large ones.  Any that you are able to play and get experience playing tournaments.
  2. Get hooked up with a poker site like Pokerinside that offers additional monetary benefits for your play.  Sponsorships, rakeback, additional tournament options etc.
  3. Set an amount of money that you are willing to risk each time you play. Start smaller and work your way to larger amounts.
  4. Play at the lowest levels possible and at a game you are most comfortable with.  EX.  0.01/0.02 NL - Dont be embarrassed that you are playing at the lowest levels this is part of increasing confidence and finding your style.  There is nothing wrong with grinding it out, it will actually make you a better player at the higher levels as you move up.
  5. Stay at that level until you can afford to move up to the next one.  Make sure that you are playing for max at all tables before moving up to maximize profits.
  6. Play ring games that suit your style best - (aggressive player - 6 max tables, tight player - 10 max tables) and play at times that you are most fresh and that you can commit the time to playing your best poker.

Stategies for Success:

  1. Bring Max to all tables that you play as long as it is within the amount of money that you are willing to afford to lose.  This will allow for you to make some mistake, maximize profits and push around the shorter stacks.
  2. Play the number of tables that you can be most successful.  I would suggest 1 or 2 to begin with and move up as you become more comfortable with your game and the level.
  3. Play very aggressive.  Make the weaker players pay to draw, pay for playing a weak A or hitting second pair. Force them to make poor decisions by betting aggressively. Dont be afraid to make pot sized bets or even over bet the flop
  4. Continuation bet in position everytime you had the lead on the pot.  That is if you raised preflop and are the first to put money in the middle on the flop.  This is very important if you are against only one opponent, if more then one opponent aggression is always best but if you miss and get called then you need to be willing to make good decisions after that.
  5. Tight is right - super tight is even more right.  Most players at the lower levels are loose and call alot.  If you play premium hands and are always raising you will be constantly be putting your opponents in poor situations and most often they will not be able to fold there hands and will pay you off.
  6. Play more hands in position and be willing to loosen up your range of hands that you play in position in multiway pots.
  7. Play middle suited connectors aggressively when make a straight and play them cautiously when you make a flush.  Nothing worse the dumping your stack to a larger flush.  Be willing to check raise all in or lead out on nut flush draws on the flop.

These are just some hints and ideas to get you started at the lower levels.  By no means is this a guarentee for success.  Every player is a little different and many different strategies work.  Find what style works for you and use it to the best of your ability.  Seek out advice and keep working on your game.
